The World of Charles and Ray Eames
The World of Charles and Ray Eames runs at the Barbican, London until February 14. Here s my review of the show for New Design 119.
On either side of the Atlantic run parallel narratives of post-war modernism. From the blitz-bombed streets of London rose brutalism manifest in the form of the Barbican; meanwhile in the sunshine and space of California, Charles (1907-1978) and Ray Eames (1912-1988) were busy defining the stylistic sensibility of mid-century America. These two strands converge in the Barbican exhibition The World of Charles and Ray Eames, the first retrospective of the designers work to be held in the UK for fifteen years.
Simplicity and Sophistication for Entire Room
The Eames chair was made of three pieces of molded plywood, which are the base, backrest, and a separate headrest. Each of these pieces covered with a rosewood covers, using cherry, walnut and other finishes as well. These three plywood of Eames chair were set with black or brown leather cushions and developed a matching ottoman to sell with the chair as a footrest. Eames lounge chair wood was the first Eames chair, which used a heavy rubber washer glued to the back support of the chair with a threaded steel plate to screw.
They also made a chromed steel frame, instead of wood, which are the Eames lounge chair metal that is similar in wood shells. Another type of Eames chair is the Eames molded plywood chair. It has versions with wooden legs and metal legs as lounging and it is durable. Its curved form, which almost hugs the sitter in a relaxed, upright posture, is a feature that reimagined in later Eames chairs to serve the various needs of consumers. Eames chairs will adorn your home with both the simplicity and sophistication.
Eames lounge chair and ottoman
Charles and Ray Eames
Who does not recognize the Eames lounge chair and ottoman? These pieces live in museums like MOMA in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and in stylish interiors around the world. The quintessential modern classic has become one of the significant furniture designs of the 20th century.
Charles and Ray Eames made the lounge chair and ottoman as a gift for their friend director Billy Wilder and began manufacturing the set in 1956 trying to maintained as much of the hand-craftsmanship as possible in its transition to mass production.
Although the chair has become iconic with Modern style, when it was first made Ray Eames thought that the chair looked “comfortable and un-designy”. Charles vision was that the chair should have “the warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman s mitt”.
Immediately following its release other furniture companies began to copy the chair s design. Some copies were direct knockoffs, while others were merely influenced by the design.
Vancouver architecture is something to marvel if you have never seen a young city on the rise. Brimming with vibrant nature and outdoor activities, you will find that many apartment buildings, condos and homes here have an ultra-modern aesthetic; complete with wide windows, minimalist facades and natural colours which lend themselves to the lush scenery. Bearing these details in mind, you will find a large cluster of high-end, luxury and mid-modern century furniture providers in the city because they are the ideal match for its architectural fashion.
